Position description
The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management (ESPM) within the Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR,) and the Department of Architecture (ARCH) within the College of Environmental Design (CED),
at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), in partnership with UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR), invite applications from qualified individuals for the position of Assistant Professor of Cooperative Extension (CE) in Engineered Wood Products and Design.
This position will provide statewide leadership in engineered wood products and design, with a focus on developing and promoting novel approaches to wood utilization that support forest ecosystem management, fire risk reduction, and greenhouse gas sequestration in California.
This position is a full-time career-track research and outreach position, and will be split 50% in ESPM and 50% in CED.
Professors of Cooperative Extension (appointed to the CE Specialist title series) conduct applied research, develop applications of research-based knowledge to specific problems, and provide educational leadership and technical information to
county-based CE academics and clientele. Professors of CE provide statewide leadership to University colleagues, public agencies, community-based organizations, stakeholders in their area of expertise, and the general public.
A Professor of CE serves as a liaison between University research units and statewide clientele. They are encouraged to keep campus and county-based CE academics and clientele apprised of emerging issues and research findings and directions. Professors of CE are expected to participate and provide leadership in ANR Program Teams, work groups, and Strategic Initiatives, work closely with CE academics toward the resolution of issues of regional and statewide importance, and coordinate statewide programming with University of
California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) and Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) colleagues throughout California.
California has large volumes of densely packed stands of small diameter trees, drought-stressed or dead trees, chaparral, hardwoods, and other forms of non-commercial woody biomass in much of California's timberlands and the wildland/urban interface. This woody biomass significantly adds to fuel loads that can be burned in catastrophic wildfires. The Professor of CE in Engineered Wood Products and Design will provide valuable support, information, analysis, and leadership to academic partners, landowners, land managers, builders,
designers, planners and policy developers involved with maintaining a healthy forest products economy, managing the wildfire risk, and providing economic and operational guidance for forest-based communities and users of wood products in multiple sectors encompassed in the built environment. The position provides capacity to help develop strategies to grow productive forest and biomass-based commodities, design intelligent waste management systems, and build a sustainable bio-based materials research and technologies of architecture, landscape design, and engineering convergence relevant to California.
The primary components of the Professor of CE position are:
Extension: The Professor of CE's objective will be to create a collaborative, multidisciplinary research and extension program with UC Cooperative Extension academics and in partnership with public and private forestland owners and managers, wood product industries, policy makers, government agencies, and community based organizations.
Specific extension-related activities of the Professor of CE might include:
Research: The Professor of CE will establish an active research program on topics related to the evaluation of physical and structural properties of under-utilized wood resources and potential economic uses; evaluation of greenhouse gas reduction potential associated with the development and use of novel wood products; and assessment of economic, social, and environmental impacts of technology and policy changes in forestry and forest products industry.
It is expected that original research findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals relevant to their field, such as:
Forest Products Journal, Journal of Wood Science, Wood Science and Technology, Journal of Forest Business Research, Wood Products Journal, Biomass and Bioenergy, California Agriculture, Proceedings of Structures Congress, Proceedings of the Annual Sustainable Structures Symposium, Proceedings of World Conference on Timber Engineering.
Other important outlets include proceedings of various conferences, professional publications such as ANR leaflets and manuals, and trade or organizational journals.
Network: External to UCANR The Professor of CE will build on existing networks within and outside the University of California. The Professor of CE is expected to collaborate across the Rausser College of Natural Resources and College of Environmental Design and with UC ANR academics, especially natural resource advisors in counties with important forest-based economies, high wildfire risk, or with wood or biomass processing facilities.
The appointee will also work closely with federal, state and local government agencies (e.g. US Forest Service, Cal Fire, California Energy Commission, California EPA, and California Resources Agency), as well as a variety of industry and community-based organizations (e.g., Joint Institute for Wood Products Innovation, WoodWorks, California Forestry Association, Sierra Business Council)
Outreach: It is expected that the Professor of CE will diligently pursue sources of extramural funding grants from the United States Forest Service, NSF, and other federal sources. Within California, it is anticipated that the Professor of CE will actively pursue and apply for forestry and forest-product-related grants funded by the state.
Location & Support: The position will be housed on the Berkeley Campus with office and laboratory space. A startup package will be provided for equipment, computers, and travel needs.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- PhD (or equivalent international degree) or,
- Enrolled in PhD (or equivalent international degree) degree-granting program at the time of application
- PhD (or equivalent international degree) required by the start date
The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree (or equivalent) related to Engineered Wood Products and Design.
Possible disciplinary backgrounds include:
- Forest ecosystem management
- Fire risk reduction
- Greenhouse gas sequestration
